The votes are in … Qualified Remodeler readers have chosen Warmup’s Radiant Electric Floor Heating System as the “Remodelers’ Choice” product of the month. This product generated the highest amount of requests of any other product featured in the November issue.

Cold Floor Syndrome is quickly becoming a thing of the past as companies and technologies spring up to cure frozen tootsies. There is a multitude of choices out there from water-based to wire systems that are either embedded in some fashion or just laid underneath the levels of flooring. Warmup, has added to the pack of choices with its ultra-low profile carbon heater system for laminate floors.

This month’s Remodelers’ Choice is a British import that we brought to you in our November 2006 issue of Qualified Remodeler. Started in 1994, Warmup started with lowprofile wire radiant heating systems for undertile. In 2002, Warmup hit the global market and brought its innovation to the United States.

Warmup’s latest creation is the Radiant Electric Floor Heating System for laminate floors and floating floor systems. This system is installed under the floor to provide either primary or supplementary heat. These heaters are energy efficient and provide a safe, even distribution of heat. Warmup Underlaminate Heaters are sold in two widths (12- and 36-in.) and are thin (thinner than a dime), so they won’t raise floor levels.

“Radiant systems give even heat across a room,” says Sharon Mangino, general manager of the United States operations. “With forced-air systems heat is moving up and around and can cause rooms to be cold in the middle. People prefer warm feet and tend to feel warmer with heat radiating from the floor — even if it’s colder around the head level.”

More and more, radiant heating is being used as a primary heat source, Mangino says, and to slightly warm up tiles during the summer when the air conditioning is on. Warmup has also seen applications go beyond just the kitchen, bathroom and sunroom. It is getting more interest from yacht and RV home owners.

Among Warmup’s other products is its Loose Wire System. It has designed this system using a 0.12-in., ultrathin, dual-core heating element. The small cross-section of this element allows it to be installed in a matter of hours with no need to dig up the floor or mix concrete. It is just simply laid down on the subfloor and tiled over. To make this wire system even simpler, Warmup also offers a Undertile Matting System. The electrical heating cable is attached to a tough fibreglass mesh, rolled out before tiling and connected to a programmable thermostat.

Although Warmup does offer a 30 year warranty transferable to any new homeowners and a SafetyNet Guarantee on the loose wire and matting system, this doesn’t ensure proper working order. Mangino states that it is important to test the system before tiling to make sure there are no problems.

Up next for Warmup, the company is looking to dive deeper into U.S. market and look at new technologies for a warm future. “I think by 2010, fifty percent of homes and offices will have underfloor heating,” adds Mangino. | Read the article.

Leading electric underfloor manufacturer, Warmup Inc, is this year’s winner of The Design Journal’s Platinum Award for Design Excellence (ADEX). The Platinum award is the highest recognition given by The Design Journal, the ultimate resource for architects and designers sourcing high-quality, new and innovative products.

From over 2,000 product entries, Warmup, was selected for their unique Warmup Dual Wire Mat Radiant Heaters. Warmup’s extensive range of heating mats, is designed to make installation in larger areas quick and easy and once it’s installed it’s hidden, allowing for interior design freedom.

The ADEX award follows on the heels of another recent award for “Exceptional Manufacturer of the Year”, bestowed by the UK Trade & Investment program recognizing Warmup’s exceptional success in taking their products to international markets, highlighting both its growth and quality of its products. The product’s new dual core heating wire now eliminates the need to loop the wire to the start point making installation fast and comes pre-spaced on a sturdy yet flexible fiberglass mesh, so that it can be quickly rolled on the area to be heated and tiled straight over. The mesh can be cut and shaped to fit around existing furniture (such as tubs, vanities or kitchen units) and because the insulated element is as thin as a nickel, it does not raise floor levels.

Backed by an industry-leading 30-year transferable warranty, Warmup also provides Installers with its unique “SafetyNet Installation Guarantee”. Should an installer accidentally damage a heater during installation, Warmup will provide a new one, free of charge*. All Warmup heating products are UL Listed and meet the most recent stringent UL Standards. Also listed on The Design Journal’s Top 40 Products are Warmup’s Dual Wire Loose Radiant Heaters, ideas for smaller, irregular shaped areas and Insulation Backer Boards, which reflect the heat upwards to improve heating performance up to 10 times faster on both cement and wood subfloors.

Sharon Mangino, Managing Director at Warmup Inc says “We are thrilled that Warmup has been awarded the Platinum Award by ADEX. At Warmup, we are dedicated to delivering only the best quality products and services to our customers. Our commitment to research and development keeps Warmup at the forefront of undertile heating technology. Offering architects and designers a choice of both loose wire and matting formats, allows them to maximize state-of-the-art heating and design freedom.” All heaters are controlled by an Energy Star rated programmable thermostat which is sold separately. Readings from the underfloor probe sensor ensure the precise temperature setting for the floor. Each thermostat allows up to 4 timer settings for each day of the week and includes an energy-consumption monitoring feature for energy efficiency, which is increasingly important as more consumers are concerned about reducing their carbon footprint. Warmup offers a free quotation and layout service, next business day, once exact area measurements are faxed or e-mailed to them. The company offers unparalleled 24/7 toll-free hotline customer service support for any problems or installation questions. Warmup, Inc is the US arm of Warmup Plc, a leading global manufacturer of electric underfloor heating systems.
The only UL listed carbon element in North America for laminate floor heating

Some of the benefits you’ll enjoy with Warmup’s new Carbon Heating System:

Cleaner – Underfloor heating reduces air currents and hence the number of airbourne allergen and dust, aiding allergy sufferers.

Aesthetics – Once the system is installed, it’s hidden, except for the discreet room thermostat. It can be used as a sole source of heating (have an architect do a heat loss calculation first), so it can replace unattractive, wal-hungry radiators, giving you more design freedom and wall space within a room. It’s also ideal for rooms with high ceilings.

Warm floors, when you want, where you want – A key benefit of electric underfloor heating is the option of warm floors when you want them, all year round, without having to heat your entire home. Each room can be individually adjusted to suit your needs.

Environmentally and economically efficient – Radiant heat is a gentle heat rising from the floor, rather than heating the ceiling space first, offering you the same comfort levels while operating at 4-50F/2-30C lower than convection systems. As a result, you save on fuel costs, especially if the subfloor is well insulated (we recommend Warmup Insulation Boards).

Safe – it won’t warp laminate or overheat because it has a positive temperature coefficient which self regulates the system, so the warmer the element gets, the lower the energy draw (maximum heating capacity is 800F/26.50C). It has been tested extensively and is UL listed, giving you peace of mind.

Anyone who has built or renovated a home during the past five years, read on. As part of the Daily Telegraph annual self-build awards, they are looking to reward strongly designed projects that are well built, haven’t necessarily cost a bomb and which are both visually appealing and innovative, as well as practical and habitable. If you think your renovation or building project – whether you commissioned it or carried out the work yourself – is special and falls into any of the relevant categories (Contemporary House, Traditional House, Ecological Home, Timber Frame Home, Value for Money, Residential Design, Extension/Remodel, Renovation, Conversion, Small Home), why not enter? All you need to do is send for an entry form from The Daily Telegraph Homebuilding & Renovating Awards, 2 Sugar Brook Court, Aston Road, Bromsgrove B60 3EX (01527 834457; email homebuilding@centaur.co.uk). Or you can download forms from www.homebuilding.co.uk. Closing date for entries is July 31. It could be worth your time: the overall winner takes home a cash prize of ?5,000.
